SHIMMEISHO NO WAZA

In 1895, the Leaders of Kodokan Judo established the Gokyo No Waza consisting of forty eight (48) throwing techniques. The Gokyo No Waza was revised in 1920 with eight (8) techniques excluded leaving forty (40) throws with five Levels of techniques forming the current Gokyo No Waza. This was now a taxonomy of Kodokan Judo Nage Waza (throwing techniques) from "easiest to most difficult" in skill level.

In 1982, after a number of new throwing techniques had come into common use and with careful consideration, the Kodokan added back the original eight (8) throws that had been eliminated in 1920, with nine new throws, (a total of seventeen (17) throwing techniques) to officially recognize the Shimmeisho No Waza.
