Virginia L. Hames Virginia began her training in karate in late October of 1991 under Sensei Billy Hames. An accomplished horsewoman in the equestrian hunter/jumper discipline, she desired a way to keep in shape during the cold winter months when riding time was limited. Her son was already under the guidance of Sensei Hames and therefore she was familiar with the aspects of Shihan-ryu. It seemed like the perfect cross-training art. By the second lesson, she was hooked and trying to determine how to continue her karate training year-round and still continue operating her riding school in Norman, OK. Where there is a will, there is a way and she has never stopped training since that first day. In June of 1996 she married Billy Hames and received her Black Belt as well. She has competed successfully both locally and nationally in NBL (National Black Belt League) events in self-defense, weapons, and kata. In 1996, although unable to attend, she qualified to compete in the NBL's Super Grand Competition held in Washington, DC. in the Women's Traditional Forms division. The Hames Karate studio is now located at High Hopes Training Center, the couple's riding academy, bringing the best of two worlds together. Virginia's love of karate has extended to her riding school, as she encourages her students to seek the benefits of karate as she has. Many have taken her advice and now cross-train with her in Shihan-ryu Karate. Virginia can be reached at: 2350 NW 60th
